Parents, Love Your Children

Like every other parent on the planet, I have my frustrated days. Any mom or dad who can look you in the eye and say they never have those little moments where they’re afraid they may lose their minds is clearly lying. We all have them. And, most of the time they pass fairly quickly, erased by all the joys and happy surprises that children naturally bring to the table.

Then there are the occasional days when things just keep mounting up. First, you discover a crayon ninja-ed its way into a load of laundry and ruined every last piece of clothing in the wash. Then your kid finds out that eggs are like nature’s water balloons and invites himself to some target practice with your refrigerator. And, while you’re cleaning up that gooey mess, your daughter walks in wearing your previously pristinely preserved wedding dress, which she has been wearing, and decorating, the entire time she’s been experimenting with your makeup. Lipstick blots come out of silk taffeta fairly easy, right? And…it’s not even noon.

These days, while hopefully few and far between, do happen to the best of us. And when they strike, they strike hard. By the end of the day you feel like Goldie Hawn in Overboard, “Bah, bah-bah, bah, bah, bah, bah-bah, bah, bah.”

It’s days like this that you have to take a parent’s time out to refocus. There’s no shame in taking a quick trip to the bathroom to splash some water on your face and refresh your attitude. After all, you’re the parent. You have to be centered to redirect the kiddos and save the day for all of you.

Remember that not everyone who wishes to be a parent gets the privilege. And, even on the most challenging day, it really is a privilege. Your kids are your legacy, your promise of tomorrow.

Parents, remember to love your children. They may make messes, ask a bajillion questions and push your buttons on occasion, but they also draw you pictures, tell you they love you and tug on your heartstrings every day. And, if it weren’t for them, you’d never have earned the most important titles of your life, Mom and Dad.
